SUMMARY:Lecture Series - Lost on the Lady Elgin
DESCRIPTION:Join the Michigan Maritime Museum Wednesday\, November 13th from 6:30pm – 7:30pm for the next segment of our 2024-2025 Lecture Series with guest speaker Valerie van Heest.\n\n\nWhen her hand touched the wood stock of a musket laying in a field of debris on the bottom of Lake Michigan from the once palatial sidewheel steamer Lady Elgin\, it ignited a passion for the study of the ship’s tragic sinking on September 8\, 1860\, off Highland Park. Now 164 years after the worst disaster on the open waters of the Great Lakes\, Valerie Van Heest\, takes the audience back in time to the era of passenger travel on the Great Lakes\, to the eve of a presidential election\, to the brink of Civil War\, and to stormy night when more than 300 people lost their lives on the Lady Elgin. Valerie’s multi-media presentation\, with an accident reenactment and underwater footage\, explores the ethical dilemmas surrounding the shipwreck incident\, the discovery of its wreckage in 1989\, a 10-year court battle over ownership of the wreck.\n\n\nThe Museum Lecture Series runs from September through April with a new lecture topic every month. Lectures are $10 per person and FREE for Museum members. Click here to reserve your tickets today!\n\n\nLectures are proudly sponsored by Nielsen-Wells Grant Fund & Mike and Susan Smith.

SUMMARY:Lecture Series- Michigan Maritime Museum: 50 Years of Legacy
DESCRIPTION:Join the Michigan Maritime Museum Wednesday\, October 16th from 6:30pm – 7:30pm for the next segment of our 2024-2025 Lecture Series. The upcoming lecture will celebrate the vibrant history of the Museum itself with Michigan Maritime Museum: 50 Years of Legacy presented by the Museum’s Director of Education & Programs\, Ashley M. What started out as a single exhibit\, the 1939 fish tug Evelyn S.\, has grown into a sprawling waterfront campus with an ever expanding collection of exhibits and on-water fleet. Now 50 years later\, the Michigan Maritime Museum has become the shining star of South Haven’s maritime district and continues the tradition of celebrating\, preserving\, promoting\, and stewarding the vibrant heritage and culture of Michigan’s Great Lakes and waterways. \nThe Museum Lecture Series runs from September through April with a new lecture topic every month. Lectures are $10 per person and FREE for Museum members. Reserve your tickets HERE. \nLectures are proudly sponsored by Nielsen-Wells Grant Fund & Mike and Susan Smith.

SUMMARY:Lecture Series: Forgotten Heroes\, The U.S. Life-Saving Service on the Great Lakes
DESCRIPTION:Our Lecture Series is back this September with renowned Great Lakes historian and author Fred Stonehouse. Stonehouse will be presenting\, “Forgotten Heroes\, The U.S. Life-Saving Service on the Great Lakes” starting at 6:30 PM Wednesday\, September 25th. From 1874 until 1915\, when it became the U.S. Coast Guard\, the men of this remarkable organization displayed incredible courage and bravery in rescuing over 55\,000 people from potential death on the Great Lakes. Despite personal danger or difficulty\, the life-savers invariably accomplished the rescue. This is their story of courage in the face of nearly insurmountable odds. Their unofficial motto was\, “Regulations say we have to go out\, they say nothing about coming back.”\n\nFrederick Stonehouse has authored over thirty books on maritime history\, many of them focusing on the Great Lakes. Wreck Ashore\, the U.S. Life-Saving Service on the Great Lakes\, won a national publishing award and is the predominant work on the subject. Stonehouse teaches maritime history at Northern Michigan University and is an active consultant for numerous maritime oriented projects and programs. He currently resides in Marquette\, MI.\n\nLectures are $10 per person and FREE to Museum members. Tickets can be purchased in advance here.\n\nLectures are proudly sponsored by the Nielsen-Wells Grant Fund & Mike and Susan Smith.
