DESCRIPTION:Join Al-Van Humane Society and the Michigan Maritime Museum for a fun\, hands-on afternoon all about animals and community. Whether you’re curious about what a humane society does\, want to teach kids how to be safe and kind around animals\, or are hoping to meet your next furry family member\, Humane Education Day offers something for everyone. Humane Education Day is a drop-in program designed for kids and families to learn what a humane society does\, how to safely and respectfully interact with animals\, and why enrichment plays such an important role in animal welfare. Throughout the event\, guests will also have the opportunity to meet adoptable pets from Al-Van Humane Society. Staff and volunteers will be on hand to answer questions about adoption\, fostering\, and animal care\, and on-site adoptions will be available for those who find their perfect match.  \nAdmission is FREE for this event as part of our Free First Sunday Series. \n

SUMMARY:MMM Lecture Series: The Story of Evelyn Wright Crawford & the First All-Women’s Crew in the Chicago to Mackinac Race
DESCRIPTION:In 1905\, Chicago socialite Evelyn Wright boarded a 32-foot sloop alongside her cousin Sara. They would become the first all-woman team to “man” a boat participating in the fledgling Chicago Yacht Club’s race to Mackinac. Join journalist and researcher Mark Reid and Chicago Maritime Museum Curator Madeline Crispell as they share their research into the fascinating life of Evelyn Wright Crawford and the history of the Chicago Yacht Club’s famous Lake Michigan race. \nAbout Our Presenters:Madeline Crispell is the Curator of the Chicago Maritime Museum\, where her exhibitions and public programs have focused on subjects ranging from architectural photography to the history of women on the Great Lakes to the Black Chicago impressionist James Bolivar Needham.\n\nMark Reid is accredited media with the America’s Cup Event\, SailGP\, and other international yachting events. He also does historical research for the Chicago Yacht Club’s Race to Mackinac History Project and is on the 150th Anniversary Committee for the CYC.\n\nTickets are free for Museum members and $10 for non-members. Doors open at 6 PM.
