DESCRIPTION:The Michigan Maritime Museum is proud to sponsor a new award category at the 58th Michigan Student Film Festival\, recognizing excellence among K-12 filmmakers whose short films explore Michigan’s waterways\, their history\, and conservation. \nWinning entries may be selected from any of the festival’s traditional categories\, including PSAs\, narrative short films\, documentaries\, animation\, and music videos. We invite you to join us Thursday\, April 9th 3:00pm-5:00pm in the R.B. Annis to help judge and celebrate the next generation of storytellers highlighting Michigan’s maritime history!

DESCRIPTION:Clothing\, Canvas\, & Craft: Civilian Sailors of the Early 19th Century \nDate: Saturday\, April 11\, 2026 \nTime: 12:30–1:30 PM  \nJoin us as Samson Historical unveils the latest in fashion for sailors… circa early 1800s that is! This presentation will cover civilian sailors’ clothing\, gear\, and personal items along with context on how individuals may have found themselves working aboard vessels in Michigan during the time of the original Friends Good Will. $5 for members/ $15 for non-members (includes admission ticket to the Michigan Maritime Museum)   \nRegister for the presentation online or by calling (269) 637-8078. \nOptional: Hands-On Workshop: Handsewn Seabag Construction \nTime: 2:30–4:30 PM  \nAfter the presentation\, Samson Historical will be hosting a two-hour instructional workshop in which participants will hand-sew a period-appropriate sailor’s seabag. All ages welcome. All ages are welcome. \nGuests can explore the Museum’s indoor and outdoor galleries\, featuring a mix of permanent and rotating exhibits that celebrate Michigan’s rich maritime history. Step aboard the Full Steam Ahead exhibit and experience the golden age of steamship travel on the Great Lakes\, or discover the heroism and ingenuity of the U.S. Coast Guard Lifesaving Service. Be sure to explore the Museum’s collection of antique and historically significant boats\, some dating back to the 1800s. \nWhile at the Museum\, don’t miss the chance to learn a classic sailor’s skill by practicing maritime knot tying in the Jerry Mason Learning Center. \nMake plans today to visit and discover the wonders of the Michigan Maritime Museum.

The Michigan Rosies is a proudly independent and Michigan-based nonprofit group dedicated to honoring the Rosies of WWII and to preserving Rosie’s legacy in Michigan and beyond.
